Instead of guessing which product works, I decided to put these spot removers through a real test that would show you exactly what to expect when you’re dealing with stubborn carpet stains at home.

Setting Up the Ultimate Carpet Cleaning Challenge

Now to start this test, I created a variety of stains which included ketchup, soy sauce, coffee, mustard, and red automotive grease. After each stain was applied, I wiped away the excess and then let it sit overnight to really put the spot removers to the test.

This overnight aging process is crucial because it mimics what happens in real life – you don’t always catch spills immediately, and dried stains are much harder to remove than fresh ones.

For comparison, I kept the top middle as a control and used only water to clean the bottom middle section. This way, we could see exactly what each best carpet stain remover candidate accomplished compared to doing nothing at all.

The Testing Process: Fair and Scientific

I then followed each product’s instructions as listed, which included variations of scrubbing and letting the product soak for 5 to 10 minutes before I used the Bissell Little Green Machine to vacuum each section.

What struck me during the application process was how different each brand behaved. Some products foamed up quite a bit while others didn’t, and I also want to mention that none of these products were sponsored for this video – they were purchased individually with the goal of giving you as honest of a comparison as possible.

This foam difference is actually important because it can affect how well the cleaner penetrates into carpet fibers and lifts stains from deep within the pile.

Which Is the Best Carpet Stain Remover?

Well, the results are in and as you can see, all of these spot removers struggled with the dried-on mustard stain, but I think we actually have a pretty clear winner when it comes to finding the best carpet stain remover.

The Clear Champion: Folex Carpet Spot Remover

That would be the Folex carpet spot remover. Now it did a great job of getting rid of that red grease as well as everything else. What really impressed me was how completely it tackled that stubborn automotive grease – something that’s notoriously difficult to remove from carpet fibers.

Every other stain disappeared completely, leaving the carpet section looking nearly new. If you’re looking for the best cleaner for carpet that can handle tough, greasy stains, Flex is definitely the way to go.

Surprising Second Place: Bissell Woolite

In a really close second, I was actually surprised to see Woolite over here. I can just barely make out a little bit of that faint red in the center there, but it also did a really great job of getting up the majority of the stains.

This was honestly unexpected because Woolite isn’t typically marketed as a specialized carpet cleaner, yet it outperformed many products specifically designed for carpet spot removal.

The Middle Pack: Solid Performers

Then we have 409 and OxyClean. I can see a little bit of ketchup left over here – I’m sure if I scrubbed that 409 a little bit more, that would come out. The OxyClean also did really well but you can see that there’s a little bit of that red grease residue left over.

Resolve and Hoover also were very, very close – again just a little bit of that red grease left over. These products would definitely work for most everyday spills, though they might struggle with the really tough, greasy stains.

The Disappointing Results

At the end of the pack here we have the Great Value brand as well as Bissell’s cleaning brand. The Bissell brand didn’t do as well with that red grease – the same with the Great Value brand that also kind of struggled a little bit with the ketchup.

This was particularly surprising with Bissell since they’re so well-known for their carpet cleaning machines. Sometimes brand recognition doesn’t translate to the best cleaning performance.

Based on these results, here’s what I’d recommend:

For Grease and Oil Stains: Flex is clearly your best bet. It’s the only product that completely eliminated that tough automotive grease.

For General Spills: Woolite offers excellent value and performance for everyday accidents like coffee, wine, or food spills.

For Budget-Conscious Buyers: Skip the store brands and invest in either Flex or Woolite – the small price difference is worth the dramatically better results.

For Light Cleaning: 409 or OxyClean will handle most fresh spills adequately, though you might need to put in extra scrubbing time.

Application Tips for Better Results

During testing, I noticed that technique matters almost as much as product choice:

• Let the product work: Those 5-10 minute soak times aren’t just suggestions – they really make a difference
• Don’t over-scrub initially: Let the chemicals do the work first, then scrub gently
• Extract thoroughly: Whether using a machine or just blotting, remove as much moisture as possible
• Work from outside in: This prevents the stain from spreading to clean areas
