The Most Effective Way to Restore a Whiteboard
Let me share the method that’s worked best for me over the years. This is my go-to approach when I need fast, reliable results.
Step 1: Deep Clean the Surface
Start by cleaning the entire whiteboard thoroughly. Use Expo White Board Care cleaner and spray it generously across the surface. Step 2: Dry Completely
After cleaning, dry the whiteboard completely with a clean, dry cloth. I usually let it air dry for a few minutes after wiping to be absolutely sure.
Step 3: Apply WD-40 for Restoration
Here’s where the magic happens. WD-40 is a multi-purpose lubricant . It’s designed to displace moisture, prevent rust, and lubricate surfaces—but it’s also incredible for restoring whiteboards.
Spray a light, even coat of WD-40 across the whiteboard surface. Then, using a clean microfiber cloth, buff the WD-40 into the surface using circular motions. You’ll notice the board starts to look shinier almost immediately.

If you prefer a homemade solution or don’t have WD-40 available, you can create your own restoration mixture. This DIY approach works well for mild whiteboard problems.
Step 1: Clean the Board
Start by cleaning your whiteboard thoroughly with Expo White Board Care cleaner or rubbing alcohol. Remove all marker residue and let the surface dry completely.
Step 2: Mix Your DIY Restoration Solution

Create a simple restoration formula by mixing:
- 1 part white vinegar
- 1 part water
- A few drops of dish soap (optional, for extra cleaning power)
Pour this mixture into a spray bottle and shake gently to combine.
Step 3: Apply and Buff
Spray the DIY solution onto the whiteboard and let it sit for about 30 seconds. Then, using a clean microfiber cloth, wipe the surface in circular motions. Buff the board until it’s dry and shiny.
This DIY method works, but it’s only effective for lighter cases of staining and dullness. If your whiteboard has severe ghosting or deep staining, you’ll likely need the WD-40 method or a commercial restoration product for better results.
How I Handle Different Whiteboard Problems
Over the years, I’ve dealt with just about every whiteboard issue imaginable. Here’s how I tackle each specific problem:
Stubborn Marker Stains and Ghosting
Ghosting happens when dry-erase marker ink seeps into the whiteboard’s porous surface and won’t come off with regular erasing. It’s incredibly frustrating, but not permanent.

For stubborn ghosting, I use this trick: write over the ghost marks with a fresh dry-erase marker, then immediately erase it. The solvents in the new marker can sometimes lift the old, stubborn ink. If that doesn’t work completely, clean with rubbing alcohol or acetone (nail polish remover) on a cotton ball, targeting just the ghosted areas. Be gentle—acetone can damage the board surface if you scrub too hard or use too much.
After removing the ghosting, follow up with the WD-40 restoration method to protect the surface and restore its shine.
Yellowing and Discoloration
Yellowing typically happens from UV exposure, age, or buildup of oils and cleaners over time. To address this, I start with a thorough cleaning using a mixture of baking soda and water to create a gentle abrasive paste.
Apply the paste to yellowed areas and gently rub in circular motions with a soft cloth. The mild abrasive action helps lift discoloration without scratching. Rinse with clean water and dry thoroughly. Then apply WD-40 to restore the protective coating and brightness.
For severe yellowing, you might need to repeat this process a few times, but I’ve seen even badly yellowed boards improve significantly.
Loss of Shine and Dull Surface
When a whiteboard loses its shine, it’s usually because the protective coating has worn down from repeated cleaning and erasing. This makes markers harder to erase and causes faster staining.
The WD-40 method is perfect for this issue. The light oil layer fills in microscopic imperfections and restores that smooth, glossy finish that makes markers glide easily and erase cleanly. After treating with WD-40, your markers should write smoothly again, and erasing becomes effortless.
Some people worry about using WD-40 on whiteboards, but I’ve never had issues when used properly. Just make sure to buff away any excess so the surface isn’t oily or slippery.
Scratches on the Surface
Light scratches can often be minimized with the WD-40 method, as the oil fills in the tiny grooves and makes them less visible. However, deep scratches that you can catch with your fingernail are usually permanent damage to the board’s coating.
For deep scratches, your options are limited. You can try applying a thin layer of car wax (the same kind used for automotive finishes) to fill in the scratch and make it less noticeable. Apply a small amount with a soft cloth, let it dry to a haze, then buff it out. This won’t fix the scratch, but it can make it blend in better.
If scratches are severe and affecting usability, that’s when I’d consider whether it’s time to invest in a new whiteboard or a resurfacing kit designed specifically for whiteboards.
