Testing Results

I didn’t run this in a lab. I ran it on my own car, my own kitchen, and my own bathroom for six months. Here’s how it did on each job.

Car interior: This is where the 18 ft cord and 10 ft hose really help. I can plug into a garage outlet and reach every seat without moving the machine. Steam loosens grime from seats, door panels, and carpet. Our guide to the best steam cleaner for car detailing shows how this compares to other options.

Engine bay: It works well for light degreasing. Spray a degreaser first, let it sit, then steam the grime loose and wipe it off. It won’t blast caked-on gunk like a pressure washer.

Kitchen and microwave: Steam softens baked-on splatter so it wipes right off. The big triangular head makes counters fast. Greasy spots may need a second pass.

BBQ grill and oven racks: The metal bristle attachment is the one to grab. It’s great on grill grates and stove racks, and the steam melts the grease while you scrub. If grill cleaning is your main goal, check our list of the best steam cleaner for BBQ grill picks too.

Bathroom tile and glass: The small jet attachment pushes dirt out of grout lines instead of smearing it around. Tile looks brighter after steaming, and the large head is great on shower walls. There’s no squeegee in the box, so for glass I use a microfiber cloth right behind the steam.

Sofa and mattress sanitizing: I steam both beds and the sofa every so often. Steam above 200°F sanitizes, and the fabric dries quickly if you don’t soak it. Keep the head moving and cover it with a microfiber cloth.

Floor mopping: The mop head is light and feels durable, and you get two pads, one with short fibers and one with longer fibers. Having two means you cover more floor before you stop to wash a pad. The pole comes in two pieces and works fine for most people. If you’re over six feet tall, you may stoop a little.

Our Review

McCulloch MC1375

The MC1375 is a workhorse with a lot of thought put into it. The tank is big, the steam is strong, and you get 20 attachments plus a carrying case. That case matters more than you’d think, because everything stays in one place.

Heat-up is not instant. It takes about 7 minutes to reach the green zone, and closer to 10 minutes to sit well inside it. There’s no ready light, so you watch the needle on the pressure gauge. Once it’s in the green, you’re good.

The steam lock is my favorite feature. Press the trigger, push the lock button, and steam stays on without your finger holding the trigger. On long jobs, that saves your hand. The yellow button doubles as a child safety lock, so the trigger does nothing when it’s engaged.

Safety is solid for a home machine. There’s a fuse that cuts power if the thermostat fails, and the boiler cap has an over-pressure release. When I touch the hose mid-job, it’s warm but not hot. I still keep kids and pets out of the room while I steam.

Now the downsides. There’s no squeegee and no microfiber bonnet in the box. A generic bonnet costs a few dollars, but you’d expect it at this level. The steam rate dial also barely changes anything. I keep it at full and never touch it.

A few habits make this machine easier to live with. Use distilled water so minerals don’t build up in the boiler. Let it cool before you add water. And squirt a little steam toward the floor before you start, because condensation can collect in the hose.

Who Should Buy the McCulloch MC1375

Buy it if you want one machine that does a lot. It’s a great fit for these people:

  • Car owners who detail their own interior and engine bay
  • Home cleaners who want one machine for kitchen, bathroom, and floors
  • Families who want to sanitize mattresses and sofas without chemicals
  • Grill owners who are tired of scrubbing grease by hand
  • Parents who want a steam lock and a child safety lock

Skip it if any of these sound like you:

  • You only need to steam a few spots now and then. A handheld will do.
  • You want a squeegee and bonnet in the box. You’ll need to buy them.
  • You hate waiting. Expect around 7 to 10 minutes of heat-up.
  • You want a lightweight steam mop for daily floors.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the MC1375 take to heat up?

About 7 minutes to reach the green zone on the gauge, and around 10 minutes to sit well inside it. There’s no ready light, so I watch the needle. I start steaming once it’s in the green.

How long does one tank last?

McCulloch claims up to 90 minutes of continuous steam from the 48 oz tank. Your real time depends on how much steam you use and how often you hold the trigger. For most jobs I rarely refill mid-clean.

Do I have to use distilled water?

McCulloch says regular water works, but minerals can build up in the boiler over time and hurt performance. I use distilled water every time to avoid that. It costs about a dollar a gallon, so it’s cheap insurance.

Does it come with a squeegee?

No. It also doesn’t include a microfiber bonnet. I bought a generic bonnet cheaply and use it over the triangular head.

Is it safe around kids?

It has a child safety lock, a fuse that cuts power if the thermostat fails, and an over-pressure release on the boiler cap. In my use the hose stays warm, not hot. I still keep kids and pets out of the room while I steam.

What does the steam lock button do?

Press the trigger, then push the lock button, and steam stays on without you holding the trigger. It’s a big help on long jobs, and I’d hate to go without it. Push the button again to release it.

What’s the warranty?

Two years for the original owner, covering material and workmanship defects. McCulloch replaces defective units at no cost.

Is the mop pole long enough?

For my floor jobs, yes. The pole comes in two pieces and I don’t have to bend over to mop. If you’re very tall, you may hunch a little, since there’s no third piece to add.

Can I clean my car’s air vents with it?

Yes, I’ve done it on my own car. I pull the cabin filter first, then aim the steam into the vents. It’s a good refresh, but not a replacement for a proper vent cleaner.
