McCulloch MC1230 Steam Cleaner Review: I Tried It on My Grill, Stove and Sofa

Handheld Steam Cleaner for BBQ Grill

If your stove, microwave and BBQ grill keep collecting baked on grease, a small steam cleaner can save you a lot of scrubbing. I bought the McCulloch MC1230 to see if a handheld this size could keep up with the Dupray Neat I’ve been using for about a year. Short answer: it can, with one catch about the water tank.

What You Get in the Box

McCulloch MC1230 Steam Cleaner Review

I opened the box expecting a pile of loose parts. Instead, everything sits inside a travel case with a printed user manual on top. That case is a small thing, but it keeps the brushes from disappearing into my cleaning closet.

The machine has a trigger for the steam and a fill port for the water. The extension hose attaches with a button. You press it down, it clicks, and you’re done.

Every attachment has a triangle cutout, so it only fits one way. Line it up and it clips right in. No fiddling, no guessing.

You also get a few brushes, a triangle nozzle, a sponge attachment and a little measuring cup for the water. The cup sounds silly until you try filling a 6 oz tank from a kitchen faucet.

Testing Results

Steam Power: The steam is hotter than boiling water, and you can feel it right away. It loosens dried gunk fast. I didn’t need much pressure on the brush.

Kitchen (Stove and Microwave): This is where I use it most. Baked on grease on the cooktop softens after a few passes, and a microfiber cloth wipes it off. The microwave is even easier because the steam loosens splatters on the walls and ceiling.

BBQ Grill: The grill was the job I was most curious about. I switched to the brush head, held the steam on the grates, and the burnt on grease came off without any chemical spray. Having a food surface cleaned with just water feels better to me.

Bathroom (Floor Tile and Glass): On tile, the steam lifts the grimy film from the grout lines and corners. The triangle nozzle is perfect for tight edges. On glass, I steam it, then wipe with a dry cloth, and it dries clear.

Sofa Sanitizing: I use it as a refresh pass on the sofa. I keep the nozzle a little off the fabric, move steadily and never soak it. I always test a hidden spot first.

Heat Up and Refills: The light tells you when it’s ready. When the water runs low, you wait for it to heat back up. On a big job like the grill, you will notice this.

My McCulloch MC1230 Review After Real Use

Here’s the thing. I already own a Dupray Neat, so I know what a bigger steam cleaner feels like. The Neat is bigger and holds more water, so I rarely stop in the middle of a job.

The MC1230 is the opposite. It’s small, light and easy to grab. I use it when I don’t feel like dragging out the big machine.

For the stove, I found the same thing I see with any steam cleaner. Steam plus a cloth beats a bottle of cooktop cream. If you want to know why that works, my guide on whether steam can remove grease explains it.

The BBQ grill was a real test. I steamed a section, brushed it, then wiped it down while the machine reheated. If grills are your main goal, I also tested other options in my steam cleaner for BBQ grill roundup.

In the bathroom, steam plus a microfiber cloth does a good job on soap film. I walk through the full routine in my guide on using a steam cleaner in the bathroom. Grout takes a little more patience, and the brush attachment helps.

For the sofa, I follow the same rules I use for any fabric. Light passes, no soaking, test first. My guide on cleaning a couch with a steam cleaner covers the details.

How It Compares to My Dupray Neat

The Neat is the stronger all around machine for long sessions. The MC1230 wins on size, weight and price.

Who Should Buy the McCulloch MC1230

Buy it if you want one small machine for stove tops, microwaves, sinks, glass, grills and the car. It’s also a smart pick if you’re new to steam cleaning and don’t want to spend a lot. And if you like cleaning with plain water instead of sprays, this fits.

It’s also a nice gift for the person who has everything and does their own cleaning. Think new homeowners and DIY people.

Skip it if you plan to steam large floors or clean for hours at a time. The small tank will frustrate you. For that, a bigger machine makes more sense.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the McCulloch MC1230 crack glass?

On normal windows and glass surfaces, I haven’t had an issue. Steam works fine on glass, stainless steel and ceramic tile. Keep the nozzle moving, don’t blast one spot, and don’t use it on glass that is already cracked or very cold.

Can I use it on my BBQ grill?

Yes, and it’s one of my favorite uses. The steam softens burnt on grease so a brush and cloth can wipe it off. Let the grill cool first, and wipe up the loosened gunk as you go.

Can I use it inside my car?

Yes. It works on door panels, cup holders, steering wheel grime and seats. Go light on fabric and leather, and test a small spot first.

Is it safe to use around kids and baby items?

It cleans with only water and steam, so you skip sprays. I like that for things like a high chair tray. Just keep kids away from the hot nozzle and let surfaces cool before they touch them.

Should I use this or a steam mop for floors?

The MC1230 is better for small areas, corners and detail work. For whole floors, a steam mop is easier. My guide on steam mop vs steam cleaner breaks it down.

Should I get the MC1230 or step up to a bigger machine?

It depends on how long your cleaning jobs run. If you only do short jobs, the MC1230 is plenty. For longer sessions, look at my comparison of the Dupray Neat vs McCulloch MC1375.
